Overview

What Is a 1095-A Form — and Who Gets One?

Form 1095-A, the Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, is the health insurance tax form the marketplace sends everyone who had an on-exchange plan during the year. Your 1095-A form lists three things: your monthly premiums, your "second-lowest-cost Silver plan" benchmark, and any advance premium tax credit paid to your carrier on your behalf. Those numbers feed IRS Form 8962, which reconciles the subsidy you received against the one your final income actually earned.

Only marketplace enrollees get one. The 1095-A is strictly a form for marketplace insurance — if your coverage came from an employer, Medicaid, Medicare, or an off-exchange health insurance plan bought directly from a carrier, no 1095-A is coming. In the off-exchange case that also means no premium tax credit, which is the trade-off to understand before you renew.

FreedInsure LLC (NPN: 20230457) is an independent brokerage licensed in 42 states. We don't prepare tax returns — but we do help members track down marketplace paperwork, fix the enrollment errors that produce wrong forms, and decide whether on-exchange or off-exchange coverage is the smarter buy next year. The service is 100% free. Call (844) 788-3733.

Quick answer: To get your 1095-A form, log in to HealthCare.gov, open your application under "Your applications," and select "Tax forms" to download the PDF. How Do You Get Your 1095-A Form? (3 Ways)

There are three ways to get your 1095-A: download it from your HealthCare.gov account (fastest), wait for the mailed copy that typically arrives by early February, or call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 and request a reprint. The online copy usually posts by mid-January — weeks ahead of the mail — and it never gets lost by the post office.

How to obtain your 1095-A online, step by step

Step 1: Go to HealthCare.gov and log in with the same account you used to enroll. If you've forgotten the password, reset it — don't create a second account, because the form lives under the original one.

Step 2: Click your name in the top corner and choose "My applications & coverage."

Step 3: Select the application for the coverage year you're filing for — for returns filed in 2026, that's your 2025 application. Picking the wrong year is the single most common reason people think their form is "missing."

Step 4: Choose "Tax forms" from the menu on that application's page.

Step 5: Download every Form 1095-A PDF listed and save them with your tax records. If a corrected version was issued, it appears here too — always use the newest one.

If your state runs its own exchange — California, New York, New Jersey, and a dozen-plus others — log in to that state's member portal instead. The menu labels differ, but every exchange posts the form inside your account. And if you can't reach anyone, our health insurance marketplace phone number guide lists every way to get a live person.

Timing

When Do 1095-A Forms Come Out?

1095-A forms come out in mid-to-late January for the previous coverage year. Marketplaces post the online copy first — often by mid-January — and mailed copies typically arrive by early February. Your form for 2025 coverage, for example, showed up in January 2026, right as tax season opened.

The form itself has three parts: Part I identifies you and your marketplace policy, Part II lists the household members it covered, and Part III carries the month-by-month money columns — Column A (your premiums), Column B (the second-lowest-cost Silver plan, or SLCSP, that your credit is calculated against), and Column C (the advance credit paid to your insurer each month).

Don't file without it if you took a subsidy. Anyone who received advance premium tax credits must reconcile them on Form 8962, and returns that skip it are routinely delayed or rejected. Entering the columns correctly is its own topic — our guide on how to report Form 1095-A on your tax return walks through Form 8962 line by line, so we won't repeat it here.

One quirk worth knowing: if you paid full price all year and took no advance credit, Column B may be blank or show zeros. That doesn't block you from claiming the credit at filing time — you can look up your SLCSP figure with the marketplace's tax tool and still file Form 8962.

Troubleshooting

What If You Never Received Your 1095-A — or It's Wrong?

If your 1095-A is missing, check your online marketplace account before anything else — the form is usually posted there even when the mailed copy goes astray. If the numbers are wrong, call the marketplace at 1-800-318-2596, request a corrected form, and wait for it before you file. Filing on bad numbers usually means amending later.

Missing-form checklist

(1) Log in and check every application year listed — forms hide under the year you enrolled for, not the year you're filing in. (2) Confirm the mailing address on your application is current. (3) Make sure you actually had a marketplace plan — the cards below show who sends what. (4) Still nothing by mid-February? Call the Marketplace Call Center and request a reprint; you can keep using the online PDF in the meantime.

📄 Form 1095-A

Sent by the marketplace (HealthCare.gov or a state exchange). The only 1095 that feeds Form 8962 and your premium tax credit — and the only one you may truly need before filing.

🏥 Form 1095-B

Sent by insurance companies, Medicaid, and other coverage providers. Proof you had coverage — keep it for your records, but it generally doesn't get filed with your return.

💼 Form 1095-C

Sent by larger employers about the coverage they offered you. Also a keep-for-your-records form. If this is what you have, stop waiting on a 1095-A that isn't coming.

❌ No form at all

Off-exchange plans, short-term medical, and health sharing generate no 1095-A — and no premium tax credit. If you bought direct from a carrier, there's nothing to track down.

Wrong numbers: corrected and voided forms

A corrected 1095-A (the "CORRECTED" box is checked) replaces your original — common triggers are wrong coverage months, premium amounts that don't match what you paid, a blank or incorrect Column B, or a household change that never got reported. Use the corrected version, and if you already filed on the original, compare the two: if the numbers change your credit, an amended return may be needed.

A voided 1095-A means the marketplace determined that policy was never actually in effect — often after a duplicate or canceled enrollment. Don't use a voided form to claim credits; if you already did, expect to amend. Either way, the fix starts with one call to the marketplace, and yes, hold times in February are real — the online account is almost always faster.

The Bigger Picture

No 1095-A Because You Bought Off-Exchange? Read This

Off-exchange plans never generate a 1095-A, because premium tax credits only exist on the marketplace. That's not a paperwork glitch — it's the core trade-off of buying direct from a carrier: simpler enrollment and sometimes a broader plan menu, in exchange for giving up any subsidy. The tax-form silence every January is simply that trade-off showing up on paper.

Whether that trade was smart depends entirely on your income. The subsidy mechanics live in our ACA marketplace guide and the off-exchange pillar — the short version is that in 2026, credits apply between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, and the "subsidy cliff" above that line is back.

Straight talk: if your 2026 income lands between roughly $15,650 and $62,600 as a single filer (about $32,150–$128,600 for a family of four), an off-exchange plan may be quietly costing you a tax credit every single month. Above 400% FPL, there's no credit to lose — and off-exchange can genuinely be the cleaner buy. We'll tell you which side of that line you're on in one 10-minute call, free, even if the answer is "stay exactly where you are." (844) 788-3733.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get form 1095-A?
Log in to your HealthCare.gov account, select the right application year under "My applications & coverage," then choose "Tax forms" to download the PDF. A paper copy is also mailed to the address on file, typically arriving by early February. If you enrolled through a state-run exchange, the form lives in that state's member portal instead.
Can I get my 1095-A online?
Yes. HealthCare.gov posts 1095-A forms to enrollee accounts around mid-January — usually 1–3 weeks before the mailed copy arrives. Log in, open the correct application year, and click "Tax forms." State-run marketplaces such as Covered California and NY State of Health post the form in their own member portals on a similar schedule.
When do 1095-A forms come out?
Mid-to-late January for the prior coverage year. Marketplaces post the online copy first — often by mid-January — and mail paper copies, which typically arrive by early February. If it's mid-February and nothing has appeared online or in the mail, call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596.
What is a 1095-A form used for?
Reconciling your premium tax credit. Form 1095-A reports your monthly marketplace premiums, your second-lowest-cost Silver plan (SLCSP) benchmark, and any advance credit paid on your behalf. Those three columns feed IRS Form 8962, which settles whether you received too much or too little subsidy during the year.
What if I never received my 1095-A?
Check your marketplace account first — the online copy usually posts weeks before the mail arrives, and it may sit under a different application year than you expect. Still nothing? Call 1-800-318-2596 and request a reprint. Also confirm you actually had a marketplace plan: employer, Medicaid, and off-exchange coverage never generate a 1095-A.
Do I need a 1095-A to file my taxes?
If you had marketplace coverage, yes. Anyone who received advance premium tax credits must file Form 8962 using the 1095-A's numbers — returns that skip it are routinely delayed or rejected. If you had employer coverage, Medicaid, or an off-exchange plan all year, you won't get a 1095-A and don't need one to file.
Why is my 1095-A wrong?
Common causes: wrong coverage months, premium amounts that don't match what you paid, a blank or incorrect Column B (the SLCSP), or a household change that never got reported. Call the marketplace at 1-800-318-2596, request a corrected form, and wait for it before filing — filing on bad numbers usually means amending later.
What's the difference between a 1095-A, 1095-B, and 1095-C?
The sender. A 1095-A comes from the marketplace and is the only one used to claim premium tax credits. A 1095-B comes from insurers or Medicaid, and a 1095-C from larger employers — both are mostly keep-for-your-records forms. Only the 1095-A drives an action (Form 8962) on your federal return.
Does everyone with health insurance get a 1095-A?
No — only marketplace enrollees. If you bought on HealthCare.gov or a state exchange, you get one. Employer coverage, Medicaid, Medicare, and off-exchange plans don't generate a 1095-A — and off-exchange buyers also can't claim premium tax credits, which is the real trade-off to weigh before renewing.
Is FreedInsure free to use?
Yes, 100%. Licensed brokers are paid by the carriers, not you — same plans, same prices as going direct, plus an advisor who can help untangle enrollment records, coverage questions, and next year's plan choice. Call (844) 788-3733.
