Quick answer (as of Oct 28, 2026): To get a health insurance quote, you need your ZIP code, the age of each person who needs coverage, your household size, an estimate of your 2027 household income, and whether anyone uses tobacco. You don't need a Social Security number just to see prices. FreedInsure, an independent insurance agency, compares quotes from 14+ carriers at no fee to you, and Marketplace plan prices are the same with or without an agent.
A health insurance quote is an estimate of what a plan will cost you each month. It isn't an application, and it doesn't sign you up for anything. For Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans, a quote also shows the premium tax credit you may get based on your income. HealthCare.gov says its preview prices are estimates and that you get exact prices after you fill out the application.
You can get quotes three ways. You can preview Marketplace prices yourself on HealthCare.gov or your state's exchange. You can estimate your tax credit with our 2027 ACA subsidy calculator, which asks only for household size and income. Or you can have a licensed agent compare plans with you, check your doctors and prescriptions, and show plans sold outside the Marketplace next to the ACA plans.
FreedInsure is a private insurance agency, not the Marketplace or a government agency. Marketplace plan prices are the same with or without an agent. FreedInsure is paid by the insurance companies whose plans we sell; you don't pay us a fee. Looking for free or low-cost coverage, like Medicaid or CHIP, instead of a quote? What Information Do You Need for a Health Insurance Quote?
Five details set the price of an ACA quote: where you live, the age of each person, your household size, your expected income and tobacco use. With these, a quote is close to the real price. Leave one out and the price you see can be far off.
| Detail | Why it matters | For a quote? | To apply? |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZIP code | Plans and prices are set by area. Some ZIP codes cross county lines, so you may be asked for your county too. | Yes | Yes, plus your address |
| Age of each person | Age is one of the few things an ACA plan can use to set your price. | Yes | Yes, date of birth |
| Household size | The people on your federal tax return set your poverty-level percentage, which sets your tax credit. | Yes | Yes |
| 2027 income estimate | Your tax credit is based on what you expect to earn in 2027 (your modified adjusted gross income, or MAGI), not on last year's pay. | Yes, for tax credit quotes | Yes |
| Tobacco use | In most states, insurers can charge tobacco users more. | Yes | Yes |
| Doctors and prescriptions | They don't change the price, but they decide which plan actually works for you. | Helpful | Helpful |
| SSN or immigration document number | Used to check identity and eligibility. | No | Yes, for each applicant |
Income tip: Use your best estimate of 2027 household income. For 2027 coverage, the Marketplace uses the 2026 poverty guidelines. 100% of the federal poverty level (FPL) is $15,960 for one person. 400% is $63,840 for one, $86,560 for two, $109,280 for three and $132,000 for four. Our 2027 ACA income limits guide has the full chart. If your income ends up higher than you estimated, you may have to pay back extra tax credit when you file taxes, and starting with tax year 2026 there's no cap on that repayment.
What Changes the Price of a Health Insurance Quote?
For ACA plans, HealthCare.gov lists five things that can change your premium: location, age, tobacco use, whether the plan covers just you or your family, and the plan category. Your income then decides how much of that premium a tax credit pays. Your health, medical history and sex can't change the price of an ACA plan.
📍 Where You Live
Prices, and the list of insurers selling plans, change by county. Two neighbors in different counties can get different quotes for the same kind of plan.
🎂 Age
For adults 21 and older, federal rules let an ACA plan charge an older person up to 3 times what a younger person pays. Example: if a plan costs $300 a month at age 21, the federal age curve allows up to $900 a month at age 64.
🚭 Tobacco Use
Insurers can charge tobacco users up to 50% more. Some states set tighter rules: CMS lists no tobacco surcharge in California, New Jersey, New York and DC, and lower limits in Arkansas and Kentucky.
👪 Who's Covered
Each person on the plan adds to the premium, but federal rules count no more than the three oldest children under 21. New York doesn't price by age at all; CMS lists its age ratio as 1:1, so prices there are set by family type.
🥉 Metal Tier
Bronze plans have lower premiums and higher deductibles. Gold and Platinum are the reverse. Silver is the only tier with extra cost-sharing savings for lower incomes. Catastrophic plans are open to people under 30 or with a hardship exemption.
💵 Income and Tax Credits
For 2027, you're expected to pay 2.15% to 10.22% of your income for the benchmark (second-lowest-cost) Silver plan, and the tax credit covers the rest. Above 400% FPL, there's no tax credit under current law, because the extra (enhanced) credits expired.
Example (2027, for illustration only): A single adult who expects to earn $60,000 is at about 376% FPL, so the expected contribution is 10.22% of income: about $6,132 a year, or $511 a month, for the benchmark Silver plan. If that plan costs $700 a month in their county, the tax credit is about $189 a month. At $64,000, just over the $63,840 limit, there's no tax credit under current law, so the same quote jumps to full price.
Plans sold outside the Marketplace follow different rules. Private PPO plans and short-term plans can ask health questions, can price or decline coverage based on your answers, and can't use a tax credit. A quote for those plans is a starting price until the insurer approves your application. For typical monthly costs by age and plan type, see how much health insurance costs per month.

How to Compare Health Insurance Quotes From 14+ Carriers
FreedInsure works with 14+ carriers, but how many sell plans in your county depends on where you live. Some counties have several Marketplace insurers; others have only one or two. Here's how we compare quotes with you:
- Share the basics. ZIP code, ages, household size, income estimate and tobacco use, by phone or with the form below.
- See the plans in your area side by side. We show Marketplace plans with your estimated tax credit, plus private PPO or short-term plans if they fit your situation.
- Check your doctors and drugs. We look for your doctors in each plan's network and your prescriptions on each plan's drug list.
- Compare the total cost, not just the premium. Add a year of premiums to what you could pay out of pocket if you get sick. A low premium with a high deductible can cost more in a bad year.
- Decide when you're ready. A quote isn't an application. Nothing is submitted until you choose a plan and say so.
How to read a health insurance quote
| Line on the quote | What it means |
|---|---|
| Monthly premium | What you pay each month, after any tax credit. |
| Deductible | What you pay for covered care before the plan starts to share costs. Many plans cover some visits before the deductible. |
| Copay or coinsurance | Your share of a covered service: a flat fee (copay) or a percentage (coinsurance). |
| Out-of-pocket maximum | The most you pay in a year for covered in-network care. For 2027 ACA plans, it can't be more than $12,000 for one person or $24,000 for a family. |
| Network type | HMO and EPO plans generally cover only in-network care, except emergencies. PPO plans also pay for some out-of-network care. |
| Tax credit | The part of your premium the government pays, based on your income estimate. Only Marketplace plans can use it. |
Our guide to deductibles, copays, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximums explains each term with examples.
Getting a Quote vs. Applying for Coverage
A quote is free, has no obligation and doesn't need your Social Security number. Applying is the step that asks for more, and it's where your price becomes final.
🔍 To get a quote
ZIP code, ages, household size, income estimate and tobacco use. No Social Security number. No commitment, and no application is submitted.
📝 To apply
Your address, income details and an SSN or immigration document number for each applicant. Starting September 22, 2026, CMS requires a number it can verify for each applicant when an agent helps with a Marketplace application. Newborns are the only exception.
When an agent helps you apply on HealthCare.gov for 2027, CMS may also ask you to approve your agent by text, email or call. Learn more in why an insurance agent needs your SSN and our 2027 ID check and agent approval guide.
Can I get health insurance quotes online without a lot of phone calls?
Yes. Before you type your phone number into any quote website, check who will call you. You can preview Marketplace prices on HealthCare.gov, or estimate your tax credit with our calculator, without giving a name or phone number. If you fill out our form, a licensed FreedInsure agent calls you from (844) 788-3733, and we never sell your information.
