Health Insurance for Pregnancy
ACA covers maternity as essential benefit. Prenatal, delivery, postpartum all covered. Pregnancy alone is NOT a qualifying life event on HealthCare.gov (but birth IS). If your income qualifies for cost-sharing reductions, Silver is often the best value. Complete pregnancy coverage guide.
Get My Free Quote ↓Quick answer: Every ACA Marketplace plan covers pregnancy and childbirth, including prenatal, delivery and postpartum care, even if you were already pregnant when coverage started, because maternity care is an essential health benefit. On HealthCare.gov, pregnancy alone does not open a Special Enrollment Period (state-run Marketplaces can set their own rules), but the birth does, giving you 60 days to enroll. Otherwise, use Open Enrollment: November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 for 2027 coverage on HealthCare.gov.

Understanding Pregnancy Health Insurance
This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about pregnancy health insurance. Whether you’re researching for the first time or looking for specific details, this resource provides expert-level information from licensed insurance professionals.
Who This Guide Is For
Anyone researching pregnancy health insurance — whether you’re experiencing this situation right now, planning ahead, or helping a family member navigate their options. This guide covers eligibility requirements, available coverage types, enrollment timelines, costs with and without subsidies, and step-by-step instructions for taking action.
Key Concepts
Understanding pregnancy health insurance requires knowing: whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (60-day window outside Open Enrollment), which plan types are available (ACA, PPO, short-term, supplemental), how subsidies affect your cost, and which carriers serve your area. Each of these factors is covered in detail below.
Your Coverage Options
ACA Marketplace Plans
The primary option for most situations. ACA plans from Healthcare.gov cover pre-existing conditions, include all essential benefits, and offer subsidies based on income. Some people still pay $0: in 2026, 29% of HealthCare.gov enrollees picked a plan with a $0 premium after tax credits (CMS). Available during Open Enrollment (Nov 1–Jan 15) or with a qualifying life event (60-day SEP). Check your subsidy →
Medicaid and CHIP for Pregnancy
Medicaid and CHIP cover many pregnant people, and you can apply any time of year, not just during Open Enrollment. Income limits for pregnancy vary by state: KFF reports a median Medicaid limit of 201% of the federal poverty level as of January 2026, ranging from 138% to 324% depending on the state. If Medicaid is your best option, we’ll tell you and point you to your state’s application.
Private PPO and EPO Plans (Outside the Marketplace)
FreedInsure also offers private PPO and EPO plans sold outside the ACA Marketplace. They use the Cigna PPO network and are not insured by Cigna: the plan, not Cigna, sets benefits and pays claims. They aren’t ACA plans, so you can’t use a premium tax credit on them, and benefits, limits and exclusions vary by plan. You can apply outside Open Enrollment, but approval depends on each plan’s eligibility and underwriting rules, and the start date depends on the plan. Ask us to confirm in writing how a plan handles pre-existing conditions and pregnancy; Marketplace plans must cover them. In the private plan documents we reviewed, the plans’ own coverage examples show a member paying about $6,050–$6,960 of a normal delivery, before any gap benefit. PPO options →
Important: Plans sold outside the ACA Marketplace may be subject to underwriting, age limits, state availability and each plan’s own eligibility rules. Not all plans are available in all states. Rates are not guaranteed and can change. Benefits, limits and exclusions are set by the official plan document or policy, which controls if it differs from this page. This page is a general summary, not a contract or an offer of coverage. These plans are not sold through the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace (HealthCare.gov or your state’s exchange) and are not individual-market ACA plans. You can’t use a premium tax credit or cost-sharing reduction to pay for them. As HealthCare.gov puts it, “the only way to get the premium tax credit is through the Marketplace.” The Cigna PPO network is a provider network, not an insurance company, and it doesn’t pay claims. A plan that uses the Cigna PPO network sets its own benefits and pays claims through its own administrator. Before you get care, confirm your doctor or facility is in network using the directory and phone number on your plan ID card.
Straight talk: A plan sold outside the Marketplace can cost less than a full-price ACA plan if you’re healthy, earn too much for a tax credit, or want a specific network. But if you qualify for a tax credit or Medicaid, have a pre-existing condition, are pregnant or planning to be, or take expensive medications, an ACA plan is usually the safer buy, and the only way to get the premium tax credit is through the Marketplace. We’ll price both side by side before you decide. Call (844) 788-3733.
Short-Term Medical
Temporary bridge coverage for gaps between plans. $95–$400/month. You can apply outside Open Enrollment, but approval and the start date depend on the plan. How long you can keep it depends on your state and the plan, from 3 months or less in some states to longer terms with renewals where state law allows. Does NOT cover pre-existing conditions and typically excludes maternity care. Best for healthy individuals between coverage periods, not for pregnancy.
Supplemental Coverage
THIS IS A SUPPLEMENT TO HEALTH INSURANCE AND IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR MAJOR MEDICAL COVERAGE. LACK OF MAJOR MEDICAL COVERAGE (OR OTHER MINIMUM ESSENTIAL COVERAGE) MAY RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PAYMENT WITH YOUR TAXES.
Hospital indemnity ($20–$50/month), critical illness ($25–$50/month), accident ($15–$30/month), dental ($25–$50/month), vision ($10–$20/month). These add benefits on top of a health plan; they don’t replace it. Hospital indemnity is fixed-indemnity coverage: it pays a set dollar amount per covered event, such as a hospital admission or day, no matter what the bill is. It has no out-of-pocket maximum, and you pay any charges above the scheduled amount. Most supplemental policies can be applied for outside Open Enrollment; approval and start dates depend on the policy. Learn more →
Costs and Subsidies
ACA With Subsidies
The enhanced subsidies expired December 31, 2025, and under current law they are not back for 2027 unless Congress acts. For 2027 coverage, premium tax credits apply at 100%–400% FPL (about $15,960–$63,840 for a single person), and you’re expected to pay about 2.15%–10.22% of income for the benchmark Silver plan, depending on income. Above 400% FPL the credit is $0. Check your exact cost →
Without Subsidies
Bronze: $350–$550/month. Silver: $450–$700. Gold: $550–$850. Platinum: $650–$1,000. COBRA: $700–$2,500 (most expensive). Short-term: $95–$400. Private PPO and EPO plans are priced by plan, age, state and eligibility; ask us to quote one next to your ACA options.
Cost-Sharing Reductions
Income at 100–250% FPL? Silver plans get CSR benefits: a lower deductible, lower copays and a lower out-of-pocket maximum. For 2027, the out-of-pocket maximum drops from $12,000 to $4,000 for one person at up to 200% FPL, and to $9,600 at 200%–250% FPL (CMS). This is separate from premium subsidies and only applies to Silver plans bought through the Marketplace. A broker ensures you don’t miss this.
How to Take Action
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Determine if you have a qualifying life event for Special Enrollment, or if Open Enrollment is active. If neither, Medicaid and CHIP accept applications any time, and you can apply outside Open Enrollment for private PPO/EPO, short-term (where your state allows it) and supplemental plans; approval depends on each plan’s eligibility and underwriting rules. A FreedInsure advisor confirms your eligibility in minutes.
Step 2: Compare Plans With a Licensed Advisor
Call (844) 788-3733 or submit the form below. Your advisor presents 3–5 best options with real after-subsidy pricing from multiple carriers. Free consultation — no obligation.
Step 3: Enroll and Confirm Your Start Date
Pick your plan and enroll over the phone. Total time: 15–30 minutes. All free. Your start date depends on how you enroll: during Open Enrollment, enroll by December 15 for a January 1 start; with most Special Enrollment Periods, Marketplace coverage starts the first of the month after you pick a plan; after a birth or adoption, it can start the day of the event. Plans sold outside the Marketplace set their own start dates after approval. In Washington, DC, we don’t sell ACA Marketplace plans: DC residents enroll through DC Health Link, and we can help with life insurance and supplemental coverage.
Step 4: Add Supplemental (Optional)
After major medical is in place, consider gap protection: hospital indemnity + critical illness + accident + dental/vision. Complete package: $50–$150/month. Supplemental options →
Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Not Checking Subsidy
KFF estimates that about half of uninsured people were eligible for Medicaid or subsidized Marketplace coverage in 2024, before the enhanced tax credits expired. For 2027 coverage, one person can earn up to $63,840 and still get a tax credit. A 60-second check costs nothing. Check now →
Mistake 2: Choosing by Premium Alone
Cheapest premium ≠ cheapest total cost. Calculate premiums + expected out-of-pocket for true cost.
Mistake 3: Missing Deadlines
60-day SEP windows are firm. Missing = waiting up to 11 months. Start enrollment within the first week of your qualifying event.
Mistake 4: Not Using a Broker
Our help is free to you. For Marketplace plans you get the same plans and prices, plus expert guidance. Zero downside.
