Can I Enroll in Health Insurance Anytime?
ACA Marketplace plans require Open Enrollment (Nov 1–Jan 15) or a qualifying life event. But short-term medical, year-round PPO plans, supplemental insurance, Medicaid, and CHIP can be purchased any day of the year with no enrollment window. This guide covers every pathway to coverage regardless of timing.

Open Enrollment Period (OEP): November 1 through January 15 in most states. During OEP, anyone can enroll in or change their ACA Marketplace plan regardless of qualifying events. Enroll by December 15 for January 1 coverage start. Enroll January 1–15 for February 1 coverage start. Some state-run exchanges extend beyond January 15 — California, New York, and others often go to January 31.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Outside OEP, you can enroll if you experience a qualifying life event within the past 60 days. Qualifying events include: loss of job-based health coverage, COBRA expiration, marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, moving to a new state or ZIP code with different plan options, turning 26 (aging off parent’s plan), losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility, gaining citizenship or lawful presence, and certain income changes that newly qualify you for subsidies. The 60-day rule is firm. You have 60 days from the date of your qualifying event to complete enrollment. Missing this window means waiting until the next Open Enrollment — potentially up to 11 months without ACA coverage.
Coverage Available Any Day of the Year
Short-Term Medical Insurance
Enroll any day. Coverage starts as soon as tomorrow. Short-term medical (STM) plans provide major medical coverage without enrollment window restrictions. Duration: up to 36 months in most states (3 months in Oregon, 6 months in Montana). Cost: $95–$400/month depending on age and plan design. Important: STM is NOT ACA-compliant — it does not cover pre-existing conditions, maternity, or all essential health benefits. Best for healthy individuals bridging to the next Open Enrollment or between jobs.
Year-Round PPO Plans
FreedInsure offers 11 year-round PPO plans through Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and First Health Network. These are not ACA-compliant but provide full major medical coverage including surgery, hospital stays, and specialist care. No enrollment window — enroll any day, coverage starts 1st of next month. Cost: $250–$600/month. PPO networks allow any in-network doctor without referrals. See PPO plans →
Medicaid and CHIP
No enrollment period whatsoever. Medicaid and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) accept applications year-round. If you qualify based on income (138% FPL in expansion states — approximately $20,800 individual, $43,000 family of 4), you can enroll any day. Coverage begins immediately or the 1st of the following month.
Supplemental Insurance
Accident, critical illness, hospital indemnity, dental, and vision insurance have no enrollment window. Buy any day, year-round. These don’t replace major medical but provide cash benefits that fill gaps. Typical coverage starts within 1–15 days of enrollment. Supplemental options →
Life Insurance
Life insurance has no enrollment window. Term, whole life, IUL, and final expense can be purchased any day of the year. No-exam policies can be issued in 24–72 hours. Life insurance options →
