Common Questions
1095-A, Answered
Six of the most-asked questions our advisors get during tax season.
What is Form 1095-A and who sends it?
Form 1095-A — the Health Insurance Marketplace Statement — is sent by HealthCare.gov or your state Marketplace by January 31 each year. It documents the months you (and your tax household) were enrolled in a Marketplace plan, what you paid, and how much advance premium tax credit (APTC) the IRS paid your insurer on your behalf.
Why haven’t I received my 1095-A yet?
If you don’t see it in your physical mail by mid-February, log into your HealthCare.gov account (or your state Marketplace account) and look under “Tax Forms” in your Messages center. We can walk you through retrieving it on a call. If it’s truly missing, the Marketplace can re-issue it — usually within 3-5 business days.
Do I need 1095-A to file my taxes?
Yes, if you had Marketplace coverage, even for one month. You can’t file an accurate Form 8962 without it, and filing without reconciling your APTC can trigger IRS notices, delay your refund, or affect your ability to get APTC in future years. Wait for your 1095-A before filing.
What’s the difference between 1095-A, 1095-B, and 1095-C?
1095-A = Marketplace plan (HealthCare.gov or state exchange). 1095-B = Medicaid, CHIP, or other minimum essential coverage. 1095-C = Employer-sponsored coverage. You need 1095-A to reconcile premium tax credits; 1095-B and 1095-C are informational only and don’t require reconciliation on your federal return.
What’s Form 8962 and how does my 1095-A flow into it?
Form 8962 reconciles the APTC you received during the year against what you were actually entitled to based on your final income. Three columns on your 1095-A — monthly enrollment premiums, second-lowest-cost Silver plan premium, and APTC paid — map directly to Form 8962 lines 12-23. We help translate them line by line.
What if my 1095-A has wrong information?
It happens. Common errors: wrong months of coverage, wrong APTC amounts, missing dependents, wrong second-lowest-cost Silver figures. Don’t file with a wrong 1095-A. Contact the Marketplace to request a corrected form — we can help you make that call and follow up. The corrected 1095-A usually arrives within 2-3 weeks.
